The story of the Aviator sunglass begins not on a fashion runway, but thousands of feet above the earth. In the 1930s, as military aircraft soared higher, pilots frequently experienced debilitating glare and headaches caused by intense blue and white light. Lieutenant General John Macready commissioned Bausch & Lomb to create specialized eyewear to address this problem.

The result was the original **Anti-Glare** glasses, featuring the oversized, convex **teardrop lens shape**. This shape was critical, designed to cover the entire human eye, blocking as much light as possible from every angle, crucial for pilots constantly scanning the skies. They were paired with thin metal frames, which were light, comfortable, and—most importantly—did not obstruct the pilot's peripheral vision.

After being officially rechristened as "Aviator sunglasses," the glasses were made available to the public in 1937. However, it was during **World War II** that they truly gained recognition.
